DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds 9: Technical Support

System requirements

The DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds Version 9 runs on the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Mac OS X 10.5.x
  • Mac OS X 10.4.x

Known issues

Info panel text is unreadable and appears "blocky" on Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6x)

Solution: Open System Preferences > Appearance and untick the 'Use LCD font smoothing when available' box.

Pictures and movies do not appear when using QuickTime 7.2

Unfortunately, QuickTime version 7.2 inadvertently introduced path problems causing pictures and videos not to work correctly. Apple have now fixed this problem with their latest version, QuickTime 7.3.

You can download the latest QuickTime from www.apple.com/quicktime/download - untick the "Sign up" selections as required, and click the Free Download Now button.

Thumbnail/Species/Quad View mode shows single asset only

When the product is closed in Single View mode only, on restarting the program selecting Thumbnail mode (or any other view mode) only displays one asset. Clicking on another species will repopulate the Browser view correctly.

Program not responding

Some older Windows PCs may exhibit intermittent problems with the program not responding. This is usually a QuickTime settings problem, and can be rectified by optimising the QuickTime settings:

  1. Exit the BirdGuides program if necessary.
  2. From Start > Control Panel in "Classic View", double-click the QuickTime "blue Q" icon:

  3. In the QuickTime Preferences window, select the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Video section, select Safe mode (GDI only), then click OK.

    QuickTime Settings window
  5. Close the Control Panel window.
  6. Rerun the BirdGuides program.

Titles of New Lists

We have identified a minor problem with the titles of new lists when making a new Navigator.

When you initially make a new list (using Features, New Navigator) you get the provisional title "New List". If you single-click on the "New List" entry in the window, the entry will turn blue. If you single-click on this entry again, you will be able to edit the title; press the Enter key on the keyboard to enter the new title. You can now drag and drop species into the list, and the when you close the list and save it, it will be saved correctly with the new title and will appear correctly in the Navigators list the next time you open the program.

However, if you use the Edit tab at the bottom of the New List window to change the name of the list, and save it, the list will be saved under the default name "New List", regardless of what you typed in the Edit tab. Next time you open the program, the navigator list will include the entry "New List". If you create a number of lists in this way, you may have a number of "New List" entries showing in the Navigator drop-down.

To correct this, select Features, New Navigator. A New List window opens; click the down arrow next to "Commoner Birds of Britain" and select the New List that you want to re-title. Now in the Navigator window below, single-click on the title, so that it turns blue. Single-click again on this blue title, and it will become editable. Re-enter your title (e.g. "Norfolk Holiday") and press the Enter key on the keyboard. Close this window, and click Yes to save changes when prompted. If you then close the program and re-open it, your list will be listed with the correct name in the drop-down Navigators list. Repeat as necessary to rename any remaining "New List" entries.

Windows Vista issues

NVIDIA and Intel hard drive controllers

Generally all BirdGuides programs from Version 6 onwards will run fine on Windows Vista. However, there are a small number of specific PC configurations that have problems opening QuickTime files and therefore running our programs. There are two types of serial hard drive controllers that cause these problems with QuickTime on Vista: Intel and NVIDIA. If your PC has the NVIDIA controller, there is a fix for it. Unfortunately we are still waiting for a fix if you have the Intel controller. To check which controller your Vista PC has, please check in the Device Manager as described below (you need to be online to carry out this procedure).

  1. Go to Device Manager: Start > Control Panel > Device Manager.
  2. On the left-hand side, click on the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
  3. You should see an entry for NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller for each hard drive you have. If it says Intel Ultra, or another Intel entry, unfortunately there is no current fix, but please let us know at so that we can keep you updated when one becomes available. If it doesn't show NVIDIA there, please also check against the "Storage Controllers" for reference to NVIDIA drivers, and carry out the same Update.
  4. Double-click on this NVIDIA reference and then select the Driver tab.
  5. The latest SATA driver version is 5.10.2600.995, dated 2/07/2007. If yours is an older version than this, click on the Update Driver button, and say Yes to Search automatically and let it find a new driver from the Web. It will load the new driver for you and tell you that you will need to restart your PC for it to take effect.
  6. If you have a second drive, repeat this operation by doing the same on the second entry for NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller.
  7. After it has installed it will tell you that it needs to restart Windows - let it, and then try the BirdGuides program.

QuickTime

If Vista says that it is changing the colour settings to basic when you open a BirdGuides program, you will need to upgrade QuickTime to the latest version, currently 7.3, for it to run in Vista's "Aero mode".

Download the latest QuickTime from www.apple.com/quicktime/download - untick the "Sign up" selections as required, and click the Free Download Now button.

Please email if you still have problems with our programs on Windows Vista.
