British Birds 9.0.1 Videos Patch

A few early version 9.0.1 disks have corrupted video files; later disks are not affected. There are 14 corrupt clips in total:

  • Great Northern Diver: breeding
  • Black-necked Grebe: breeding
  • Gannet: courtship display
  • Cormorant: collecting nest material
  • Shag: 'wing-drying' behaviour
  • Night Heron: adult, flight
  • Little Bittern: adult male
  • Gadwall: flight
  • Scaup: drake (with Tufted Duck)
  • Smew: female
  • Red-breasted Merganser: female with young
  • Bee-eater: adults
  • Lanceolated Warbler: 1st winter
  • Reed Bunting: non-breeding

If you suspect you have this problem, go to Lanceolated Warbler and try the video. If it fails, you need to download the British Birds 9.0.1 Videos Patch. We apologise for this inconvenience.

Pictures and movies do not appear when using QuickTime 7.2

Unfortunately, QuickTime version 7.2 inadvertently introduced path problems causing pictures and videos not to work correctly with BWPi or The DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds Version 9. Apple have now fixed this problem with their latest version, QuickTime 7.3.

You can download the latest QuickTime from www.apple.com/quicktime/download - untick the "Sign up" selections as required, and click the Free Download Now button.

Thumbnail/Species/Quad View mode shows single asset only

When the product is closed in Single View mode only, on restarting the program selecting Thumbnail mode (or any other view mode) only displays one asset. Clicking on another species will repopulate the Browser view correctly.

Program not responding

Some older Windows PCs may exhibit intermittent problems with the program not responding. This is usually a QuickTime settings problem, and can be rectified by optimising the QuickTime settings:

  1. Exit the BirdGuides program if necessary.
  2. From Start > Control Panel in "Classic View", double-click the QuickTime "blue Q" icon:

  3. In the QuickTime Preferences window, select the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Video section, select Safe mode (GDI only), then click OK.

    QuickTime Settings window
  5. Close the Control Panel window.
  6. Rerun the BirdGuides program.

Titles of New Lists

We have identified a minor problem with the titles of new lists when making a new Navigator.

When you initially make a new list (using Features, New Navigator) you get the provisional title "New List". If you single-click on the "New List" entry in the window, the entry will turn blue. If you single-click on this entry again, you will be able to edit the title; press the Enter key on the keyboard to enter the new title. You can now drag and drop species into the list, and the when you close the list and save it, it will be saved correctly with the new title and will appear correctly in the Navigators list the next time you open the program.

However, if you use the Edit tab at the bottom of the New List window to change the name of the list, and save it, the list will be saved under the default name "New List", regardless of what you typed in the Edit tab. Next time you open the program, the navigator list will include the entry "New List". If you create a number of lists in this way, you may have a number of "New List" entries showing in the Navigator drop-down.

To correct this, select Features, New Navigator. A New List window opens; click the down arrow next to "Commoner Birds of Britain" and select the New List that you want to re-title. Now in the Navigator window below, single-click on the title, so that it turns blue. Single-click again on this blue title, and it will become editable. Re-enter your title (e.g. "Norfolk Holiday") and press the Enter key on the keyboard. Close this window, and click Yes to save changes when prompted. If you then close the program and re-open it, your list will be listed with the correct name in the drop-down Navigators list. Repeat as necessary to rename any remaining "New List" entries.
