Known Problems and Limitations in Version 8

Please note the following minor functionality issues and content limitations in this release of The DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds. Please check the page http://www.birdguides.com/bdvd/knownissues.asp for possible updates that may resolve these problems.

Content

Video Assets

A few clips have poor audio quality.

A very few clips have poor compression quality.

Functionality

This is the first release of a major new software program and it is possible that users may discover undocumented bugs. Please report any problems you come across on the BirdGuides website (web address detailed above).

Generally when you encounter a serious problem, the best thing to do is to quit the application and relaunch. If this does not solve the problem, then try restarting your computer. As a last resort, uninstall and then reinstall the program.

The minor issues listed below have been reported but currently remain unresolved:

Macintosh version:

Thumbnail images may "smear" when scrolled.
WORKAROUND: REDUCE THEIR SIZE WITH ZOOM CONTROL

Videos in Full screen mode don't always play.
WORKAROUND: USE THE LEFT/RIGHT CURSOR KEYS TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER ASSET AND THEN BACK AGAIN

Occasionally maps display as blank regions.
WORKAROUND: TRY SWITCHING TO THUMBNAILS VIEW AND THEN DOUBLE-CLICKING THE AFFECTED ASSET.

Occasionally video clips continue playing and cannot be closed, even by switching to a different species.
WORKAROUND: QUIT AND RESTART THE APPLICATION.

On some older 10.2 versions of Macintosh OSX assets may not display in the browser although thumbnails can be viewed. In this situation we recommend checking the updates website listed above for a new version of the OSX software. When this is available it will be possible to download it. Alternatively you may consider upgrading to OSX 10.3 which offers significant improvements in many areas.

Windows version:

Thumbnail icons do not always update correctly in the navigator.
WORKAROUND: CHANGE TO ANOTHER SPECIES AND BACK

On some systems resizing the application window with the browser in Quad View very occasionally leaves assets overlapping.
WORKAROUND: SLIGHTLY RESIZE THE WINDOW AGAIN

Annotations on illustration assets in Quad View can sometimes appear oversize when the scale slider is set at minimum.
WORKAROUND: INCREASE DISPLAY SCALE SLIGHTLY

Changes from Previous Versions

The DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds is based on BWPi (Birds of the Western Palearctic Interactive) and has a brand-new interface. As a result, some features of previous versions of the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds are no longer available:

Bird Quiz

What Bird was That?

List Maker

Lists from Maps

If you wish to continue to use these features we recommend you do not uninstall your previous version. Version 8 of the DVD-ROM Guide to British Birds will coexist with previous installations of earlier BirdGuides products on the same computer. Some of these functions may be added to future releases of this product.

Some of the functionality of List Maker and the Bird Log can be achieved using custom lists and by adding Notes to species collections - see Creating a New Navigator and Adding Your Own Notes to Species respectively.
