Using The Browser

Click the Thumbnail View button to view the complete asset set of the selected species as small thumbnail style pictures in the browser.

In any of the browser modes you can use the Zoom Slider control to change the size of the displayed assets - see Scaling Assets in the Browser.

Single View

Click the Single View button to display the currently selected asset on its own. Alternatively double-click any asset either in the browser or navigator to display it in single view mode.

This provides a more detailed display of individual assets and allows annotations of illustrations to be viewed - see Viewing Illustration Assets.

Use Ctrl (Command on Mac) + Left/Right arrows to scroll through the assets in Single View mode.

Species View

Click the Species View button to display a composite of assets representing the selected species. This normally includes an illustration, a video clip, the distribution map and the Bird File text arranged as shown. If the selected species does not have one or more of these assets, alternative assets will be displayed.

Click the Quad View button to display a composite of four assets for the selected species arranged as shown. This normally includes two illustrations and two video clips. If the selected species does not have one or more of these assets, alternative assets will be displayed.

Viewing Illustration Assets and Annotations

Illustrations include the following asset types:

Picture Plates

Photographs

Distribution Maps

Right-click (Mac: Command-Click) on the illustration asset to pop-up a menu of actions that you can perform on the illustration:

Annotations can be toggled on and off by clicking on the Show/Hide Annotations menu item. This may be useful if you are preparing a set of illustrations for presentation and you do not require annotations - see Presenting your Asset Collections as Slide Shows.

The complete annotation set can be copied to the clipboard independently of the illustration using Copy Annotations. These can then be pasted as a list into another document such as Microsoft Word™.

Click on the Larger Annotations menu item to increase the text size of the annotations.

Click on the Smaller Annotations menu item to decrease the text size of the annotations.

Viewing Text Assets

Use the Contents Navigator on the left side of the text to jump to specific sections within the Main Text Body. If you only want to view the Main Text Body, drag the right border of the Contents Navigator to the left to collapse it.

Right-click (Mac: Command+Click) on the text asset to pop-up a menu of actions that you can perform on the document.

Selected text can be copied to the clipboard using the Copy menu item or by pressing Ctrl+C. This can then be pasted into another document such as Microsoft Word™. Similarly, use the Copy All References menu item to copy and paste just the references into another document as a list.

Click on the Larger Text menu item to increase the text size of the documents main text body.

Click on the Smaller Text menu item to decrease the text size of the documents main text body.

The complete document can be searched using the Find in Text feature. This displays a standard search dialog allowing you to enter specific words to look for in the document.

Viewing Notes Assets

Notes are user-created text assets created for a particular species. Use them to add your own observations or identification tips to the assets on the disk.

Notes

To create a new Notes asset, see Adding your own Notes to a Species.

To view or edit an existing Notes asset, double-click on the Notes icon in the Asset Selector, or the asset itself in the browser, then click in the box and type whatever you want.

Playing Media Assets

Media assets include the following two asset types:

Media clips normally play and loop automatically when they are displayed in the browser depending on your Preferences settings. However, if the browser is in Thumbnail View then the media clips must be started by selecting Play.

Use the Media Control Panel in the assets caption bar to control the clip.

Play media clip

Stop playback

Rewind media clip to start

Right-click (Mac: Command+Click) on the media asset to pop-up a menu of actions that you can perform on the media.

Use the Play, Stop and Rewind menu items to control the media clip in the same way as the Media Control Panel.

Navigating Through Browser Pages

The DVD-ROM keeps track of each of your visited pages allowing you to flick backwards and forwards through them quickly. Click the Forward and Back buttons in the browser toolbar to move backwards or forwards (if a particular direction is not available the appropriate button will be greyed out).

A browser page can be cleared of its contents by clicking the Clear button in the browser toolbar. This is useful when building your own asset collection - see Making your own Asset Collection. To view the species assets again, re-select the species in the navigator - see Selecting a Species.

Scaling Assets in the Browser

To change the size of displayed assets, use the browser toolbar's Zoom Slider control. This will size the assets from the smallest possible images at its minimum position to the largest possible images that will fit in the browser in the current view mode at its maximum position.

Please note that with the browser in thumbnail mode and the scale set to maximum there will be some degradation in performance when running the DVD-ROM on low-specification machines.

To maximize the browser display area to the full size of the screen, click the Full Screen button on the features toolbar or select Full Screen from the features menu. Currently displayed assets will be re-sized according the current zoom scale and browser view mode. To Exit out of full screen mode press Esc or Ctrl+O (Mac: Command+O). Alternatively right-click (Mac: Command+Click) in the browser and select Exit Full Screen from the browser context menu.

Taking Snapshots of the Browser

Your current browser layout can be saved at anytime as a snapshot. Select Save Snapshot As from the file menu and enter a snapshot name. To recall your snapshot of the browser select Open Snapshot from the file menu.

This is very useful if you have assembled a special browser layout, say of mixed species assets for comparison (see Mixing Assets from Different Species), and wish to save it for future reference.

You can edit the title displayed in the browser before you save it by right-clicking (Mac: command-clicking) on the title (or if there is no title, in the empty space above the assets) and selecting Edit Title from the context menu that appears.

Viewing Asset Information

Click the Information button in the features toolbar or asset caption bar to display the asset information dialog. Alternatively select Information from the Features menu or asset menu.

This provides you with information about the asset, such as its origin, copyright and technical details about its file type and format.

Click the browser's Toggle Captions button to hide or show the asset caption bars.

Individual assets can be removed from the browser page by right-clicking (Mac: Command-clicking) on the asset and selecting Remove from the asset menu. To view the asset again, re-select the species in the navigator - see Selecting a Species.

Changing the Species Title Language

Right-click (Mac: Command-click) in an empty area of the asset browser and select Language from the context menu to display a list of language options as shown here. Select the desired language from the list. The title will refresh to display in the selected language. The navigator language will not be affected.

See Changing the Navigator Display Language for more information on changing the language of the species selector lists.

Note that if assets from more than one species are being viewed in the browser, the species title will not be displayed unless you create a specific title and save the collection as a Snapshot - see Mixing Assets from Different Species.
